Uncle O’Grimacey was a short lived character created by McDonald’s who debuted for the company in 1975 to help sell Shamrock Shakes around St. Patrick’s Day. The urban legend about O’Grimacey’s demise tells the story in 1978 of a man portraying him at an event in Philadelphia where he proceeded to go on a tirade supporting the IRA. Not long after McDonald’s discontinued the character. There is almost no proof of this ever happening but like all urban legends it has taken on a life of its own and Uncle O’Grimacey has long since become an icon in the interplay between Irish-Americans and Irish unification.
NORAID is the Irish Northern Aid Committee. Started in 1969, the organization helped to fundraise in America for Republican efforts in Ireland during The Troubles. In 1981, after being sued by the US Justice Department, NORAID was forced to register the IRA as its “foreign principal”. This essentially forced them to admit they were a subsidiary of the IRA.
This shirt, designed by legendary Irish artist Spicebag, combines the two.
